Being committed to maintaining the highest level of integrity, the Vienna Yearbook of Population Research (VYPR) adheres to the principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journals.
Any forms of misconduct, including copyright infringement, plagiarism, duplicate submission, redundant publication and recycling, citation manipulation, data fabrication, peer review manipulation, translations of articles without prior notification of the editors, undisclosed competing interests and other breaches of good scientific practice, are taken seriously and the VYPR will take necessary actions in accordance with the COPE guidelines in dealing with the allegations.
In suspected cases of misconduct, we will initially alert all those affected and ask for their response. If the response is not deemed satisfactory, we reserve the right of sanctions commensurate with the circumstances and the gravity of the alleged offence. The sanction may range from suspension of the review process; publishing an expression of concern or retraction of published papers, to involving relevant employers, institutions and funders, or reporting to an appropriate regulatory body to investigate more serious cases.
Following the recommendation on transparency in author’s contributions and responsibilities to promote integrity in scientific publication*, VYPR presumes that each author listed on the manuscript is expected
to have made substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data; or the creation of new software used in the work; or have drafted the work or substantively revised it;
AND
to have approved the submitted version and any revision of the manuscript;
AND
to have agreed both to be personally accountable for the author’s own contribution and ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.
The ordering is at the authors’ discretion, and all co-authors are assumed to have agreed on the ordering of authors prior to the submission of manuscript. The authors must also agree on one corresponding author. The corresponding author acts on behalf of all co-authors in any communication about the article through submission, peer review, production, including copyright agreement, and after publication. Corresponding author’s contact details are published in the article in addition to the affiliation.
Authors are supposed to list all relevant affiliations, particularly, the institution where the majority of their work was done. If an author has subsequently moved, the current institution may additionally be stated.
Changes in authorship including the sequence of authors are generally not allowed after the manuscript has been accepted. Adding and/or deleting authors at revision stage are only permitted in exceptional cases and must be agreed upon by all authors, including those being added or removed. The authors need to provide evidence on the agreement to the editorial office with a full explanation about why the change was necessary. The VYPR reserves the right to retract the manuscript in case of disagreement among the authors.
Any individuals who have contributed to the article (i.e., technical assistance, scholarly discussions, etc.), but who do not meet the criteria for authorship should be listed by name in an Acknowledgments section printed at the end of the article. It is the responsibility of the authors to notify and obtain permission from those they wish to identify in this section.

Any complaints or appeals against an editorial decision must be directed to the Editor, editors.vypr(at)oeaw.ac.at. The rebuttal letter should include as much detail as possible. The case will be reviewed by the Editor-in-Chief, who may consult expert advice on the topic.
Note that we do not consider letters that are abusive or threatening; we reserve the right to initiate a procedure of misconduct in such cases.
Authors must declare any potential competing interest or conflict of interest when submitting their manuscript. A competing interest or conflict of interest can occur when the authors (or their employers) have a financial, commercial, legal, or professional relationship with other organizations that could influence their work submitted for publication. The disclosure statement should be included in the cover page accompanying the submission of the manuscript. In addition, sources of funding must be declared in the final accepted paper in the Acknowledgement section.
In order to ensure that all submissions receive an objective and unbiased evaluation we adopted policies that exclude editors and editorial team members from reviewing and publication decisions when they are authors or have contributed to a manuscript. In particular, the journal editors will adhere to the following policies:
The VYPR supports reproducible research. We thus encourage authors to submit data, code, etc. as supplementary materials along with their manuscript.
The VYPR expects authors to follow ethical standards of scientific conduct, in particular with regard to research on vulnerable populations, informed consent to publication, handling confidential data and other relevant ethical and data protection issues. Authors should include a statement of compliance with ethical standards in the submission cover letter and should provide information on approval by appropriate bodies, such as research ethics committees or institutional review boards, if applicable.
For the sake of transparency, any source of funding or other support should be clearly identified in the Acknowledgements of the final manuscript.
The VYPR is an open access journal without any fees: Article submission, processing and publication, including colour figures and illustrations, are free of charge. Since 20 May 2020, articles are published under the terms of a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) licence, which allows the sharing, use and adaptation in any medium, provided that the user gives appropriate credit, provides a link to the license, and indicates if changes were made.

Submitted paper and all supplementary materials are expected to constitute an original work that has been written by the stated authors and has not been published before. Preprints posted on public preprint servers, institutional working papers, conference proceedings and papers on conference websites do not count as prior publication and therefore do not infringe the latter requirement. Authors should disclose details on preprint or working paper posting, and in event that the submitted article is accepted for publication in the VYPR, authors are responsible that the preprint or working paper record is updated with a reference and link to the published article.
Duplicate, multiple or redundant publication (“self-plagiarism”) are not accepted by the VYPR and will be considered as academic misconduct. Expansion of previously published work must provide sufficiently novel results and must be properly cross-referenced.
The submission must not include copyrighted materials, in full or in part, unless an explicit permission from the copyright holder that it can be reproduced under the terms of a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) licence is provided with the submission.
Plagiarism is not accepted by the Vienna Yearbook of Population Research and will be considered as academic misconduct.
The journal follows BRGÖ (2013) definition of plagiarism:
Plagiarism is the deliberate and unlawful adoption of another’s intellectual property: the author uses, in whole or in part, works by others in his or her own work without acknowledging the source. It is irrelevant whether the other person’s work has been taken over verbatim or slightly altered.

The Vienna Yearbook of Population Research screens all submitted manuscripts using plagiarism detection software, PlagScan (https://www.plagscan.com) and iThenticate (https://ithenticate.com), and other appropriate checks as required.
In cases of suspected plagiarism, the VYPR will follow the COPE guidelines, which may result in the rejection of the submitted manuscript during peer review, or the correction or retraction of the published article, as appropriate.

Accepted versions of submitted manuscripts can be published in a repository of the authors´ home institution without any embargo period, provided that the forthcoming publication in the VYPR is acknowledged. Upon publication, this record must be updated and a link to the published version of the article on the VYPR website should be added.
Deposition of published version (Version of Record) of articles published prior to 20 May 2020 is permitted provided that the publishers’ copyright and source is acknowledged and a link to the published version at the journal’s website is given. Since 20 May 2020, articles are published under the terms of a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) licence, which allows the sharing in any medium, provided that the user gives appropriate credit and provides a link to the license.
The Vienna Yearbook of Population Research is published by the Vienna Institute of Demography of the Austrian Academy of Sciences with Austrian Academy Press as publishing house. The submission and reviewing process are managed using OJS software, hosted at the Center für Digitale Systeme (CeDiS) der Freien Universität Berlin. Online access to all articles is for free. Printed copies of the annual issues can be ordered from Austrian Academy Press.
The VYPR strongly encourages scientific debate. Thus, we also welcome commentaries that challenge previous work published in the VYPR. Authors of the discussed articles are invited to respond. Both commentaries and responses by the authors are published online upon approval by the editors. Letters and materials using insulting, hostile, or defamatory language will be disregarded.
Errata and corrections are amended to published papers on the journal’s website.
